Japan PM Fumio Kishida evacuated after explosion at his speech venue

According to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated from a venue in Wakayama city on Saturday after an explosion was heard.

According to Japanese officials, Kishida was unharmed in the incident. NHK video footage showed members of the public fleeing and a man being arrested as a result of the incident.

According to NHK, Kishida was about to give an outdoor speech at the venue in the Japanese port city when an “explosion-like sound” was heard on the scene.

An NHK reporter present on the scene said it is “believed that something was thrown in and exploded”, CNN reported.

Shinzo Abe, Kishida’s predecessor, was assassinated at close range on July 8, 2022, while delivering a speech at a political campaign rally event in Nara.
