On Monday, CM Ibrahim, the State President of Janata Dal (Secular) party, directed criticism towards the newly elected Congress government under Siddaramaiah’s leadership for its lack of action on the Cauvery water dispute. He pointed out that despite a drought situation in the state, the new government has not taken any measures.
Ibrahim revealed the establishment of a committee headed by former minister GT Devegowda to convene with party leaders across the state and address pertinent issues affecting the populace. Speaking with ANI, Ibrahim emphasized, “Under GT Devegowda’s leadership, a committee has been constituted. This committee will engage with our party leaders across the state. Despite the drought situation arising after the new government assumed office, no actions have been initiated.”
He further recalled that during an all-party meeting convened to discuss the Cauvery issue, HD Kumaraswamy represented JDS and provided suggestions.
Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, instructed Water Resources Department officials on Monday to prioritize the welfare of Karnataka farmers concerning Cauvery water allocation. He indicated the inability to allocate 83 Tmcft of water, citing the risk of depleting reservoirs and endangering drinking water availability.
For years, the Cauvery water issue has been a contentious matter between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, centered on water-sharing from the Cauvery River—a crucial resource for irrigation and drinking water for millions in the region. To address disputes over water-sharing capacities, the Centre established the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on June 2, 1990, involving Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry.
Originating in Karnataka and traversing Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry before reaching the Bay of Bengal, the Cauvery is an interstate basin. Its total watershed spans 81,155 sq km, with approximately 34,273 sq km falling within Karnataka, 2,866 sq km in Kerala, and the remaining 44,016 sq km spanning Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
