There is widespread speculation regarding Kamal Haasan’s party engaging in talks for an alliance with the DMK led by Chief Minister M K Stalin in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing reporters in Chennai after leading the 7th-anniversary celebrations of MNM, actor-politician Kamal Haasan clarified on Wednesday that his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has not aligned with the opposition INDIA bloc. He mentioned that while discussions regarding political alliances are ongoing, MNM will support any group that prioritizes the nation’s interests without getting involved in local feudal politics.
Haasan emphasized the need to transcend partisan politics and focus on the nation’s welfare. He stated, “Anybody who thinks selflessly about the nation, my MNM will be part of it.” When questioned about joining the INDIA bloc, he firmly stated that he has not.
Makkal Needhi Maiam, established by Kamal Haasan on February 21, 2018, has positioned itself as a centrist party with a focus on social justice, economic development, and environmental sustainability. It advocates for policies that promote the well-being of the common people and inclusive growth.
Despite contesting in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and state assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, aiming to provide an alternative to the dominant Dravidian parties, namely the AIADMK and DMK, MNM’s electoral performance has been modest.
Regarding potential political alliances ahead of the upcoming general elections, Haasan mentioned ongoing discussions and assured that any significant developments would be shared with the media.
