Tragedy struck in Thiruvananthapuram as a 46-year-old woman succumbed to severe burns sustained during a horrifying incident where she was set on fire by a male friend. The grim event unfolded the previous night, resulting in over 90% burns for the victim, who tragically lost her life the following morning, according to police reports.
The assailant, who also suffered significant burns ranging from 60-70%, is currently receiving medical treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The Pothencode police station officer revealed that the man, identified as a friend of the victim, had visited her residence on the fateful evening and engaged in a heated argument with her.
The altercation took a devastating turn when the man doused the woman with petrol and ignited the flames, leading to catastrophic consequences. In a desperate attempt to escape the spreading fire, the assailant leaped into a nearby well, where he was subsequently rescued by fire and rescue personnel.
Both the victim and the accused were swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, the woman could not overcome her severe injuries and passed away the following morning.
Initially categorized under sections 307, 326, and 447 of the IPC, which pertain to attempted murder, causing grievous hurt by fire, and criminal trespass respectively, the case is expected to be elevated to include section 302 for murder, pending the completion of inquest proceedings.
The motive behind this horrific incident remains unclear, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. It has been disclosed that the victim, a widow, resided with her daughter and mother, further amplifying the tragedy of her untimely demise.
