Amid a diplomatic dispute with the Maldives triggered by ‘disparaging comments’ made by three Maldivian deputy ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress party has accused the PM of adopting a ‘personal’ approach since assuming power in 2014. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking to the media, emphasized the importance of maintaining positive relations with neighboring countries at the international level. Kharge remarked, “After Narendra Modi came to power, he is taking everything personally. At the international level, we should keep a good relationship with our neighbors…We should act according to time…We cannot change our neighbors.”
The diplomatic tensions arose after derogatory remarks were directed at PM Modi by three Maldivian deputy ministers following his visit to the Lakshadweep Islands to promote tourism. PM Modi’s social media posts promoting tourism in the Lakshadweep islands led to a social media feud between Maldivian politicians, government officials, and Indian social media users. In a since-deleted post, Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, made mocking and disrespectful references to PM Modi.
Despite the controversy, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made by officials, emphasizing India’s status as one of the closest neighbors and allies of the Maldives. MATI acknowledged India’s consistent support as a first responder to various crises in the history of the island country. The association highlighted India’s substantial contributions to the Maldives’ tourism industry and expressed gratitude for India’s assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a press release, MATI expressed a sincere desire for the enduring closeness between the two nations and urged refraining from actions or speech that could negatively impact their strong relationship.
