Stressing the importance of accountability and prompt action in response to disrespectful comments made by senior officials against Indian Prime Minister Modi, Mickail Naseem, a Member of Parliament from Maldives, has urged the Parliament to summon the foreign minister due to the perceived inaction and lack of urgency exhibited by the Maldives government.
The parliamentarian has formally requested the parliamentary committee to summon the officials implicated in making derogatory remarks for questioning. Naseem, representing Galolhu Dhekunu, shared the formal request on X, stating, “Have formally requested the Parliament to summon the Foreign Minister for questioning following the inaction & lack of urgency shown by GoM regarding derogatory remarks against PM Modi by its senior officials. The request was also sent to summon said officials to a parliamentary committee.”
A significant controversy ensued after a Maldivian deputy minister, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made disparaging comments about PM Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep. During his visit on January 2, PM Modi shared pictures on X, showcasing the scenic beauty of Lakshadweep and his snorkeling experience. However, a now-deleted post by the Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Shiuna, included mocking and disrespectful references to PM Modi’s visit, accompanied by images from his Lakshadweep trip.
Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the use of ‘hateful language’ against India by government officials on social media. Solih emphasized that New Delhi has always been a good friend to the island nation, expressing his disapproval through a post on social media platform X, saying, “I condemn the use of hateful language against India by Maldivian government officials on social media.”
