India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the United Nations’ failure to address global challenges, such as the manipulation of trade regulations by certain countries to the detriment of the international system. Speaking at the ongoing Raisina Dialogue 2024 in New Delhi, Jaishankar emphasized the necessity for comprehensive reforms within the UN due to its outdated structure and inability to adapt to the increased number of member states since its inception.
Jaishankar pointed out that despite the significant expansion in membership over the years, the UN has struggled to find effective multilateral solutions to various pressing issues, indicating a pressing need for reform. He criticized the exploitation of world trading rules by certain nations for their benefit, undermining the principles of globalization and the integrity of the international system.
Addressing the complex geopolitical landscape characterized by diverse positions on key issues, Jaishankar stressed the importance of seeking common ground. However, he acknowledged that achieving consensus would be challenging, especially considering the emergence of new global players and the reluctance of some established powers to embrace reforms, notably China’s opposition to UN Security Council restructuring.
India has long advocated for comprehensive reforms within the UN, particularly in the Security Council, aiming for greater representation and inclusivity. Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj reiterated India’s support for reform during recent negotiations in New York.
The panel discussion at the Raisina Dialogue also explored the possibility of rebuilding trust in the international system and the role of emerging powers in fostering effective multilateral cooperation. Participants discussed strategies for addressing global challenges and making the “Global South” more aspirational.
Other participants in the dialogue included Hanke Bruins Slot, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands; January Yusuf Makamba, Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of Tanzania; Jorge Quiroga, former President of Bolivia; and Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates.
