Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) Secures Majority in Mizoram Assembly Elections
The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has achieved a significant victory by winning 26 seats in the 40-seat Mizoram assembly, surpassing the required halfway mark. According to the Election Commission of India, the ZPM has secured victory in 25 seats and is leading in two others as of 2:30 pm.
The incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) has managed to win only seven seats and is leading in three others. In a notable setback for the ruling MNF, Chief Minister Zoramthanga lost the Aizawl East-I seat to ZPM’s Lalthansanga by a margin of 2,101 votes.
Mizoram’s political landscape, traditionally dominated by the Congress and MNF since achieving full statehood in 1987, has witnessed a significant shift. Chief Minister Zoramthanga, a prominent figure in this election, faced challenges as the MNF marked victories in only a few constituencies.
Deputy CM Tawnluia lost to ZPM candidate W Chhuanawma in the Tuichang seat, while Health Minister R. Lalthangliana and ZPM candidate Jeje Lalpekhlua faced varying results in their respective constituencies.
ZPM’s Chief Ministerial candidate, Lalduhoma, secured a clear victory in the Serchhip constituency, defeating MNF candidate J Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng by 2982 votes.
Despite the MNF winning in several constituencies, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made significant gains in the Siaha district, bordering Myanmar. The BJP’s performance in Mizoram is described as “little unexpected” by the state party chief, Vanlalhmuaka. The BJP secured two seats and expressed its acceptance and respect for the people’s mandate.
Four major contenders, including the ruling MNF, ZPM, Congress, and the BJP, participated in the Mizoram assembly elections held on November 7. The election results indicate a notable shift in the political dynamics of the northeastern state.
