On the fifth day of the Monsoon Parliamentary Session, a number of opposition party MPs gave notices in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha requesting discussion on the Manipur issue, which has been the primary reason for the ongoing logjam in both chambers since the monsoon session began.
In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manickam Tagore has moved an adjournment motion notice demanding a discussion on the Manipur situation.
Opposition Manoj Jha of the RJD and Tiruchi Siva of the DMK have both filed motions for the suspension of business notices under Rule 267, with the latter asking the Upper House Chairman to halt all other business scheduled for the day, including the Zero Hour and Question Hour, so that the situation in the violently unstable state can be discussed. A similar notice has also been proposed in the case by the Congressmen Ranjeet Ranjan, Rajeev Shukla, and Raghav Chadha of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated that a resolution of no confidence against the government will be introduced in the Lok Sabha today by the opposition alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.). The Manipur violence will be discussed, and the opposition parties are considering a motion of no confidence since it would need a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law, and Justice’s 126th and 127th Reports on Demands for Grants (2023–24) pertaining to the Department of Personnel and Training and Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions are scheduled to be discussed when the Parliament reconvenes today at 11 a.m. Union Minister Jitendra Singh is scheduled to make a statement regarding the implementation of these recommendations and observations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move for leave to introduce a bill further amending the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. Along with this, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav will move the bill to amend the Forest Conservation Act, of 1980.
In Rajya Sabha, the motion for election to the council of the Indian Institute Of Science (IISc) Bangalore will be moved.
The government has said it is ready for discussion on Manipur, but the opposition parties are pressing for discussion under a rule that entails voting.
