In a tragic and unfortunate incident on the Mumbai-Jaipur Superfast Express on Monday, where four passengers, including an RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tikaram Meena, were fatally shot by an RPF constable identified as Chetan Kumar. The RPF jawan has now been arrested for the shooting.
According to officials, the incident took place while the train was en route to Mumbai, and the constable opened fire using his official weapon. The reason behind the firing remains unclear, and an investigation is underway.
Divisional Railway Manager Neeraj Kumar shared that the information about the incident was received at 6:00 AM. Railway officers promptly reached the spot, and the families of the deceased were informed.
In response to the tragic event, Western Railways has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 25 lakh to ASI Tikaram Meena, which includes Railway Surksha Kalyan Nidhi (Rs 15 lakh), funeral expenses (Rs 20,000), DCRG (Rs 15 lakh approx), and GIS (Rs 65,000 approx).
Chief PRO Western Railway Sumit Thakur expressed regret over the incident and stated that the constable was arrested by RPF/Bhayandar, while further investigation is ongoing.
The incident occurred in the B5 coach of the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express (Train number 12956) after it crossed Palghar Station in Maharashtra. RPF officials have taken the accused constable into custody along with his weapon. The situation is being closely monitored, and a detailed report will follow.
