The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra for today, July 25. Additionally, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has placed a yellow alert for the city, while an orange alert has been issued for Thane, Palghar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Raigad, and Ratnagiri.

The IMD forecasts that districts in Konkan are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations. Similarly, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in the Ghat region of Madhya Maharashtra. The RMC also predicts heavy rain in isolated places in North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, with Vidarbha expected to face thundershowers, gusty winds, and heavy rain at isolated spots.

In an update from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Tansa Lake, a key water source for Mumbai, began overflowing at approximately 4:16 PM today. The BMC has opened three gates of the Tansa Dam, releasing water at a rate of 3,315 cusecs. The lake’s full storage capacity is 14,508 crore liters.
Heavy rainfall in Mumbai has caused significant disruptions to train services. The Central Railway announced on X that the PANVEL-CHOUK line has been suspended since 09:42 HRS due to the adverse weather conditions. Consequently, Train No. 12126 will now operate via Kalyan.
In addition, the Konkan Railway has short-terminated trains at Thane and Dadar stations because of ongoing extension work on platforms 10, 11, 12, and 13 at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT).

Furthermore, the Central Railway has rescheduled the CSMT-MADGAON Tejas Express (Train No. 22119) due to the heavy showers. Originally set to depart at 5:50 PM, the train will now leave at 7:30 PM.

Also, Air India has announced that the heavy rains are impacting flight operations at Mumbai’s airports, leading to cancellations and diversions. “Heavy rains in Mumbai are affecting flight operations and resulting in cancellation and diversion of some of our flights. Air India is offering full refunds or a one-time complimentary rescheduling for bookings confirmed for travel on July 25, 2024,” the airline stated in a post on X. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport and can contact the airline’s center at 011 69329333 or 011 69329999 for further assistance.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed three teams in Pune: two teams in Ekta Nagar and Sinhagad Road, and one team in Varje, to assist with ongoing relief efforts.
Mumbai Traffic Police have also issued a notice regarding traffic disruptions. “The Andheri subway in Nagar is closed for traffic due to 1 to 1.5 feet of water. Southbound traffic has been diverted through Gokhale Bridge, and northbound traffic through Thackeray Bridge. Citizens are advised to take note,” the Traffic Police posted on X.
