Congress continues to debate as to who will become the next Karnataka CM with Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar both steadfastly defending their positions and a new round of meetings scheduled for Wednesday morning to reach a decision.
As per party sources, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi is anticipated to arrive in Delhi on Wednesday from Himachal Pradesh and meet with some decision-makers in Karnataka. According to the sources, DK Shivakumar, the head of the Karnataka Congress, is likely to accept Sonia Gandhi’s recommendations to assist the party in resolving the state’s leadership issue.
The previous deputy chief minister of Karnataka, Dr. G. Parameshwara, has also expressed interest in the top position in the state, promising to carry out the duties if given the opportunity. “If the Congress high command gives me the responsibility of the CM post, I will definitely fulfill it. They know everything about me and my work. I don’t want to lobby,” he told.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Congress, has discussed matters with all Karnataka stakeholders. Rahul Gandhi, the party’s top leader, met with Kharge on Tuesday to talk about the formation of the state’s administration.
KC Venugopal, the Congress general secretary (Organization) told: “a good decision will come”. “Decision will come, wait. Good decision will come. It will come as soon as possible,” Venugopal told while leaving Kharge’s residence.
According to the reports, Kharge and the central observers will probably meet on Thursday at 11 am. After the announcement of the results, the freshly elected Congress MLAs authorized Kharge to take a decision on Sunday. Both DK Shivakumar and former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah arrived in Delhi when the center of attention shifted from Karnataka to Delhi.
In order for the party to concentrate on its preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the leadership of the Congress is eager for an early decision about the choice of Chief Minister and also wants to guarantee that there are no rifts in the way the government or party are being managed in Karnataka.
Factionalism is already a problem for the Congress in Rajasthan, and the disagreements over leadership in Chhattisgarh are still very much alive. Jyotiraditya Scindia’s resignation cost the party in Madhya Pradesh.
A formula is being worked out by the Congress leadership where expectations of various communities can be fulfilled with the announcement of Deputy Chief Ministers. The party has appointed several observers in Karnataka who spoke with MLAs and submitted their reports to the Congress leadership. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will be taking the final call after consultations with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, sources told.
“No final decision has been made on the Karnataka CM post yet. Congress president has met all the stakeholders. Now the final decision will be taken by him in consultation with Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. The announcement can be delayed until tomorrow and the announcement can be made in Bengaluru itself,” a source stated.
On Tuesday, Kharge met with both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Along with his son Yatindra, MLAs Zameer Ahmad, Bhyrati Suresh, and senior leader KJ George, Siddaramaiah visited Kharge’s home.
DK Shivakumar, earlier in the day said that he’d not resort to “backstabbing or blackmail” irrespective of the party’s decision over Karnataka CM post. “If the party wants they can give me the responsibility……. Ours is a united house, our number is 135. I don’t want to divide anyone here. Whether they like me or not, I am a responsible man. I will not backstab and I will not blackmail,” he told.
“The party is my god…We have built this party, I am a part of it and I am not alone in this,” he said before he left Bengaluru. “We have built this party (Congress), we have built this house. I am a part of it…A mother will give everything to her child,” Karnataka CM candidate further added.
Responding to a question on his expectations as party state president he said, “I don’t want to comment on what has happened earlier. How it happened. That is a closed chapter we formed the government we lost the government, we lost a coalition government. Who is responsible for the victory and loss there is no use of talking about it now. Let us not sell this story… let us sell the future.”
Congress realized a landslide victory in the Karnataka assembly poll by acquiring 135 seats in the 224-member house leaving BJP with just 66 seats.
