Jaish-e-Mohammad operative arrested by NIA in terror conspiracy case

On Sunday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended a Kashmir-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operative in connection with a terror conspiracy case in Jammu and Kashmir.

The agency detained Mohd Ubaid Malik, a native of Kashmir’s Kupwara area, based on information that he was in frequent contact with a JeM commander located in Pakistan.

“Investigations have revealed that the accused was passing on secret information, especially regarding the movement of troops and security forces, to the Pakistan-based Commander,” the National Investigation Agency said.

The arrest is part of the NIA’s operation to clamp down the proscribed terrorist organizations based across the border plotting to destabilize India through terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

The NIA also found many damning documents in the accused’s possession, demonstrating his involvement in the furthering of terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

NIA registered a suo moto case to crackdown the terror organizations

On June 21, last year the NIA registered the case on its own accord. It is linked to conspiracies hatched by cadres and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of multiple proscribed terrorist organizations in collaboration with their Pakistan-based commanders.

“It involves collection and distribution of huge consignments of narcotics, cash, weapons, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), including remote control operated sticky bombs and magnetic bombs,” the agency stated.

“The IEDs and explosives are often being delivered over drones and are also being assembled locally, in order to execute terrorist attacks in J&K, as per the NIA investigations. The attacks are mainly targeted at the minorities and security forces personnel.”

The terrorist plots are being hatched both physically and virtually using encrypted social media platforms, with the overriding goal of upsetting peace and communal harmony, indulging in terrorist acts, and waging war against the Government of India, according to the anti-terrorism agency.
