Rahul Gandhi asserted on Friday that the opposition bloc comprehends India’s relationship with Russia and generally aligns with the country’s stance regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Gandhi made these remarks during a press conference held at the Brussels Press Club while on a European tour organized by the Indian Overseas Congress.
He expressed his belief that the majority of the opposition would support India’s current position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the existing rapport with Russia. When questioned about India’s increased purchase of Russian crude oil, despite Western sanctions on Russia, Gandhi reiterated India’s stance that its oil imports are determined by national interest and the needs of its substantial consumer base.
India’s consistent stance has been that Russia should engage in dialogue and diplomacy to facilitate a swift resolution of the conflict. Gandhi also addressed the exclusion of Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge from the G20 Summit, criticizing the central government’s decision. He suggested that this omission reflects a disregard for the leader representing 60 percent of India’s population, urging people to ponder the underlying reasoning behind such a decision.
Rahul Gandhi’s itinerary includes travel to Paris, where he plans to engage in discussions with French lawmakers. His final stop before returning to India will be Norway, where he is expected to meet with members of the Norwegian parliament. As preparations intensify for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections next year, the 28-party opposition bloc, known as INDIA, is working on developing a comprehensive strategy against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the national level.
