Pakistan: Special Court Grants Imran Khan Permission for Phone Conversations with His Sons

The Special Court under the Official Secrets Act has granted former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan permission to communicate with his sons via telephone until September 15, as reported by The News International. Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, had been seeking the opportunity to speak with both his legal counsel and his sons for an extended period.

One of Imran Khan’s legal representatives, Sheeraz Ahmed Ranjha, disclosed that the court had issued an order instructing jail authorities to facilitate telephonic conversations between Imran Khan and his sons. However, despite the court’s directive, jail officials had not granted permission, according to ARY News.

Furthermore, Imran Khan’s legal team faced obstacles when attempting to meet him at Attock Jail. Lawyers Sheeraz Ahmed Ranjha and Gohar Ali had scheduled meetings with Khan earlier in the month.

According to The News International, Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain has issued a notice to Attock Jail Superintendent Arif Shehzad, requesting a report on the implementation of the court’s order. Additionally, PTI Chairman Khan has approached the special court to address the jail superintendent’s non-compliance with the court’s directive concerning arrangements for telephonic conversations with his sons, as reported by The News International.

The Toshakhana case has emerged as a significant point of contention in Pakistan’s political landscape after the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified Imran Khan for allegedly making “false statements and incorrect declarations,”. The Toshakhana case centers on allegations that Imran Khan did not disclose details of gifts he received from Toshakhana during his tenure as Pakistan’s Prime Minister.

Subsequently, an Islamabad Court suspended Imran Khan’s conviction and ordered his release on bail from Attock Jail. Nevertheless, the special court directed that Imran Khan remains in judicial remand in the cypher case.

The cypher case, involving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) chief, was relocated to Attock jail, as approved by the Ministry of Law, according to a statement from the ministry.

More recently, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) summoned Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, in connection with the Toshakhana case. Bushra Bibi is accused of retaining various items, including jewelry and precious metals, from the Toshakhana gifts. The NAB alleges that these gifts were not properly submitted to Toshakhana for valuation.
