Parliament’s Budget Session Extended to February 10, Buzz Over ‘White Paper’ on Economy

The ongoing Budget Session of Parliament has been extended by a day, with proceedings now scheduled to conclude on February 10. Initially set to end on February 9, the extension was announced by Speaker Om Birla in the Lower House and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Rajya Sabha.

The decision to prolong the session comes amidst anticipation surrounding the government’s plan to present a ‘white paper’ on the economy, particularly during the tenure of the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

During the Union Interim Budget presentation on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the government’s intention to release a ‘White Paper’ comparing the economic performance of the 10-year periods under the UPA and NDA administrations.

Highlighting the achievements of the Modi government since assuming office in 2014, Sitharaman emphasized the strides made in steering the economy towards sustained growth and development. She underscored the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that the White Paper would provide insights into the economic trajectory during both periods.

“The exemplary track record of governance, development, and performance, coupled with effective delivery and ‘Jan Kalyan,’ has earned the trust, confidence, and blessings of the people,” Sitharaman remarked, reiterating the government’s dedication to realizing the vision of a developed India.

As Parliament’s Budget Session continues, the extension offers lawmakers additional time to deliberate on crucial government business, including the forthcoming presentation of the anticipated ‘White Paper’ on the economy.
