Parliament’s Budget Session Live Updates: Lok Sabha Analyzes Government’s White Paper

The Lok Sabha is expected to witness turbulent scenes today as members engage in a discussion on the ‘White Paper,’ which was presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The paper compares the economic management of the previous 10 years under the Congress-led UPA government with that of the current 10 years under the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled regime. The Union Finance Minister will move, “That this House do consider the White Paper on the Indian Economy and its impact on lives of the people of India,” in accordance with the Lower House’s daily schedule of business. Sitharaman presented the nearly 60-page White Paper to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Thursday, stating that the banking crisis was one of the most significant and notorious consequences of of the UPA government.

The meeting, which began on January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu’s speech to the joint sitting of the two Houses, has been adjourned until February 10 by one day. Originally, it was scheduled to end on February 9.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attacked the UPA on Friday, accusing it of mismanaging the economy during the 2008 global financial crisis. She claimed that the Congress prioritized the “first family” and caused the economy to become “fragile five.” Sitharaman began the discussion on the “White Paper on Indian Economy and its impact on the lives of people of India” by stating that while India’s G20 presidency under the Narendra Modi administration gained international respect, the Common Wealth Games (CWG), held during the UPA regime, gave the nation a “bad name.”

Congress MP Manish Tiwari spoke on the ‘White Paper’ in Lok Sabha, and said: ‘This is not a white paper, this is a black brush’.

He added, that it is nothing but a ‘political manifesto’.

Nirmala Sitharaman Addresses Lok Sabha on White Paper: Key Highlights

  1. Last 10 years restored India’s glory
  2. ‘White Paper’ has been laid on the table by the government, after 10 years of pulling out an Indian Economy which was in fragile five to reach the stage of top five.
  3. It is a statement laid with responsibility
  4. UPA did not put nation first, left economy in tatters by putting family first
  5. 10 years of one government with some crisis and 10 years of a different government with different crisis.
  6. The comparison shown in this ‘White Paper’ clearly says how if the government handles it with true sincerity, transparency and putting the nation first, the results are there for everybody to see.
