PM Modi hands over gavel of G20 presidency to Brazil President Lula da Silva

Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally closed the G20 Summit in New Delhi on Sunday and proposed the organization of a virtual G20 session in November to evaluate the recommendations and proposals put forth during this prominent forum for global economic cooperation.

With India holding the G20 presidency until November 2023, PM Modi stressed the importance of swiftly advancing progress on the ideas discussed at the summit. He suggested that a virtual session be convened in November to revisit the summit’s key topics.

In a symbolic gesture, PM Modi transferred the G20 presidency gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, extending his congratulations on assuming this role. Earlier, ahead of Session 3 of the G20 Summit, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Lula da Silva had presented saplings to Prime Minister Modi. Brazil is set to take over the G20 presidency from India, following Indonesia’s presidency in the previous year.

India officially assumed the G20 presidency on December 1 of the preceding year during the G20 Summit held in Bali and will maintain this role until the end of November. The G20 leaders had previously endorsed the New Delhi Declaration on the first day of the Summit. Furthermore, on Sunday morning, the G20 leaders paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi by visiting Rajghat.
