PM Modi, Global Leaders Unite in Dubai for COP28 World Climate Action Summit

World leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, converged in Dubai for the COP28 World Climate Action summit, marking the commencement of a crucial conference focused on addressing climate change challenges globally.

In the customary ‘family photograph,’ Prime Minister Modi was seen engaging with various leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Union President Ursula von der Leyen. The presence of Britain’s King Charles III added a royal touch to the event, where leaders from across the globe gathered to emphasize the urgency of climate action.

Prior to the summit, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The leaders posed for a picture together, setting the tone for collaborative efforts in combating climate change.

During his 21-hour stay in Dubai, PM Modi is scheduled for seven bilateral meetings, four speeches, and participation in two special initiatives on climate events, showcasing India’s commitment to the global cause. Among the key events, he will address the opening session of the World Climate Summit Action, highlighting the need for collective action.

PM Modi will also attend the Presidency’s session on Transforming Climate Finance, hosted by the UAE, and a high-level event on the Green Credits Programme, co-hosted by India and the UAE. Additionally, he will participate in the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) Event, co-hosted by India and Sweden, emphasizing the importance of industry engagement in climate solutions.

In an interview with UAE-based newspaper Aletihad, Prime Minister Modi stressed the collective challenge of climate change, calling for a unified global response. He emphasized that developing countries, despite not being major contributors to the problem, are ready to be part of the solution but require access to financing and technology.

“Climate action must be based on equity, climate justice, shared obligations, and shared capacities,” PM Modi stated, underlining the principles necessary for forging a sustainable future that leaves no one behind.

This marks Prime Minister Modi’s third appearance at the World Climate Action Summit, following his participation in Paris in 2015 and Glasgow in 2021.

On the opening day of COP28, the UAE supported a crucial decision to operationalize the loss and damage fund for developing nations. The fund aims to provide financial assistance to countries recovering from climate disasters and address other climate-related emergencies.

COP28, held from November 28 to December 12 under the Presidency of the UAE, presents a unique opportunity for leaders to impart momentum for collective action towards combating the shared challenge of climate change on a global scale.
