Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in Delhi on Gandhi Jayanti. In a statement posted today, PM Modi emphasized Gandhi’s global influence and called for a collective effort to realize his vision.
“I extend my reverence to Mahatma Gandhi on this special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. His timeless wisdom continues to guide us. Mahatma Gandhi’s influence resonates worldwide, inspiring humanity to embrace unity and compassion. Let us always strive to fulfill his aspirations. May his ideals empower every young person to become a catalyst for change, promoting unity and harmony,” stated the Prime Minister.
Earlier in the day, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress national president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, also paid homage to Gandhi at Rajghat. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Delhi Lieutenant Governor LG Saxena similarly honored Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti.
On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her greetings to the citizens, urging them to incorporate Gandhi’s values and teachings into their thoughts, words, and actions, dedicating themselves to the nation’s well-being.
Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, championed nonviolent resistance and played a pivotal role in the struggle for India’s independence from British colonial rule, ultimately leading to its attainment in 1947. Revered as Bapu, his unwavering commitment to ‘Swaraj’ (self-governance) and ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) earned him international acclaim.
Gandhi’s birth anniversary is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.
In preparation for Gandhi Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated a cleanliness campaign on October 1, stressing that Swachh Bharat (Clean India) is a shared responsibility, and every contribution matters. The “Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath” Campaign serves as a significant part of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations and leads up to the “Swachhata Pakhwada- Swachhata Hi Seva” 2023 campaign.
PM Modi encouraged people across the country to actively participate in this cleanliness drive, describing it as a substantial step toward realizing Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a cleaner India.
