On Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid respect to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, saying that these are greats who made an incomparable contribution to our freedom struggle. On March 23, 1931, the three freedom fighters were hanged by Britishers in the Lahore conspiracy case.
Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, “India will always remember the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru. These are greats who made an unparalleled contribution to our freedom struggle.”
Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya were among the leaders who paid their respects.
Gadkari tweeted, “Millions of salutes to the revolutionaries Bhagat Singh ji, Rajguru ji and Sukhdev ji on their sacrifice day, who sacrificed their everything for the motherland.”
Meanwhile, Birla tweeted, “Emotional tribute to the martyrdom day of Amar Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev ji, the symbol of bravery of Indian youth. The great work done by him to achieve the goal of freedom of Mother India is an inspiration for the youth of the country. The country will always be grateful for those sacrifices.”
The official Twitter handle of ‘Amit Mahotsav,’ the movement to commemorate 75 years of independence, also released a video from the’shaheed special series,’ which featured the amazing stories of liberation warriors.
Many around the country paid their honours to the freedom heroes with trending Hashtags of ‘Bhagat Singh’, ‘Sukhdev’, ‘Rajguru’, and ‘Shaheed Diwas’.
Shaheed Diwas is held on March 23 to honour Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, who were hanged by the British government in 1931. In 1928, the trio was convicted of murdering constable JP Saunders in order to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. When Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hanged at Lahore Central Jail, they were all 23 years old.
