PM Modi Unveils Redeveloped Kochrab Ashram And Launches Gandhi Ashram Memorial Master Plan At Sabarmati

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram and unveiled the Master Plan of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial at Mahatma Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The Kochrab Ashram, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1915 upon his return from South Africa, was the first ashram he founded in India. It remains preserved as a memorial and tourist space under the management of Gujarat Vidyapeeth.

During the event, Prime Minister Modi planted a sapling at Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, emphasizing his commitment to upholding and promoting the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and creating avenues that bring the leader closer to the people.

The Master Plan for the Gandhi Ashram Memorial Project aims to revitalize and propagate Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings and philosophy for current and future generations. The plan outlines the expansion of the existing five-acre area of the ashram to 55 acres, with restoration and conservation efforts for 36 existing buildings.

As part of the project, significant structures like ‘Hriday Kunj,’ Gandhi’s residence, will undergo conservation, while others will be restored or reproduced. New buildings will be introduced to accommodate administration facilities, visitor amenities, and interactive workshops on various crafts associated with Gandhi, such as charkha spinning, handmade paper production, cotton weaving, and leatherwork.

These structures will host interactive exhibits and activities showcasing different aspects of Gandhi’s life and the ashram’s legacy. The project also includes the creation of a library and archives building to preserve, protect, and disseminate Gandhi’s ideas, providing facilities for visiting scholars to use the ashram’s resources.

An interpretation centre will be established to guide visitors in multiple languages, enhancing their cultural and intellectual experience. The memorial is envisioned as an inspirational space for future generations, fostering Gandhian principles and values through a process informed by the concept of Trusteeship. Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to promote and uphold Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals continue through such projects, aiming to connect people with the profound legacy of the Father of the Nation.
