In a bid to bolster the longstanding and robust ties between India and Bhutan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a state visit to Bhutan from March 21-22. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed this official statement, highlighting the visit as a crucial step in further enhancing the bilateral relationship.
The visit, in line with India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, will witness high-level exchanges between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi’s agenda includes meetings with key dignitaries, including Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
During these engagements, discussions will revolve around a wide range of bilateral and regional matters of interest, emphasizing the unique and enduring partnership based on mutual trust, understanding, and goodwill. Both countries share a deep-rooted spiritual heritage and warm people-to-people ties that enrich their exceptional relations.
Formal diplomatic ties between India and Bhutan were established in 1968, with the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation serving as a cornerstone since its signing in 1949, subsequently renewed in February 2007. Over the years, high-level exchanges have played a pivotal role in nurturing the strong bond between the two nations.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck’s visits to India, including his last one in November 2023, have underscored the close ties between the countries. Similarly, Prime Minister Modi’s previous visit to Bhutan in August 2019 marked a significant milestone with the launch of major bilateral projects aimed at boosting economic cooperation and connectivity.
The recent official visit of Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan to India in March 2024 further reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to enhancing bilateral relations across various domains, including development cooperation and vibrant economic ties.
The upcoming state visit by Prime Minister Modi signifies a continued commitment to strengthening the India-Bhutan bilateral relationship, paving the way for deeper cooperation and mutual benefit between the two nations.
