Silkyara Tunnel Rescue: Protection Umbrella for the rescue team

To ensure the safety of the rescue team working to free 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel for two weeks, authorities are constructing a protective umbrella within the tunnel, according to official sources.

In addition to the safety measures being taken, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is contributing to the well-being of the 41 trapped workers in the Silkyara tunnel. As part of these efforts, BSNL is providing a landline to facilitate communication between the stranded workers and their families. Kundan, a BSNL official, mentioned that they are currently in the process of sending a compact landline phone to the workers through a pipe, allowing them to communicate directly with their families and alleviate some of the stress they are facing.

BSNL has established a compact telephone exchange at the tunnel site, and the landline provided to the trapped workers will be connected through a dedicated line. Additionally, as part of efforts to address the well-being of the workers during the rescue operation, a senior official involved in the operation mentioned that some mobile phones had been sent to the stranded workers. This provision aims to provide them with a means of entertainment, such as playing games, to help alleviate stress during their challenging situation.

“There is no mobile network nearby but we are also considering providing Wi-Fi connectivity. We are also considering providing a cricket bat and ball to the workers so that they can play cricket. You can spend your time playing because there is a lot of space inside the tunnel where the workers are trapped, so cricket can be played easily,” the official said.

On Saturday, Lt General Syed Ata Hasnain (retired), a Member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), revealed that there has been no progress in the past 24 hours in the drilling efforts aimed at rescuing the 41 workers who have been trapped in the Uttarkashi tunnel for the past 13 days. He mentioned that the drilling work has faced a setback as a portion of the American-Auger machine was broken, impeding progress and blocking a potential escape route for the trapped workers.
