Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, will return to his former seat of Wayanad in Kerala on Tuesday for the first time since his disqualification as a Member of Parliament (MP).
He will address a public rally and hold a roadshow in Wayanad during his visit. Rahul Gandhi was expelled from the Lower House of Parliament after a Surat court found and sentenced him in a criminal defamation case in 2019. The lawsuit concerned a remark he made while addressing a campaign gathering ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which he used the surname “Modi.”
At a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar in April 2019, Rahul, in a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”.
Rahul was disqualified as an MP on March 24, 2013, following his conviction, according to a 2013 Supreme Court judgement. According to the judgement, any MP or MLA who is convicted and sentenced to two years or more will be automatically disqualified.
