UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, attending the G20 Summit, stated on Saturday that the world is seeking guidance from the G20 to navigate through a period of significant challenges. He conveyed his belief that the leaders, coming together at this moment, will collectively address these challenges.
“15 years ago, #G20 leaders came together for the first time to restore global growth after the financial crisis. We meet at a time of enormous challenges – the world is looking to the G20 once again to provide leadership. Together I believe we can address these challenges,” Sunak said in a post on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the inaugural session titled ‘One Earth’ at the G20 Summit. During his speech, he highlighted that India’s G20 Presidency has become a symbol of inclusivity, not only within the country but also on a global scale. He emphasized that it has transformed into “People’s G20” in India, connecting millions of citizens.
PM Modi also discussed the global challenges and suggested that the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ can serve as a guiding principle to address these challenges.
“India’s G20 presidency has become a symbol of inclusion, of ‘sabka saath’ both inside and outside the country. This has become People’s G20 in India. Crores of Indians are connected to this. In more than 60 cities of the country, more than 200 meetings have taken place.
With the sense of ‘Sabka Saath’, India had proposed that the African Union be granted permanent membership of G20. I believe that all of us agree to this proposal,” he said.
PM Modi extended an invitation to the African Union’s leader to join the G20 as a member. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar escorted the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani, as he assumed his position among global leaders.
“With everyone’s approval, I request the African Union Chairperson to take his seat as a permanent G20 member,” PM Modi said.
In preparation for the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered a warm welcome to various world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. As these leaders arrived, PM Modi greeted them against the backdrop of a replica of the Konark Wheel from Odisha.
Upon their arrival at the G20 venue, Rishi Sunak and PM Modi exchanged warm greetings with a Namaste, shook hands, and even shared a hug, all while posing for photographs. Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, arrived in Delhi on Friday, marking his first visit to India as Prime Minister since taking office in October of the previous year.
