Expressing support, Russia’s Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, affirmed Russia’s full backing of India’s right to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He highlighted that the matter was extensively discussed by the foreign ministers of both countries in December. Alipov, speaking at a public talk on international turbulence in the National Capital, stated, “Russia is fully supportive of India’s right to become a permanent UN Security Council member. This topic was also discussed in depth between the Foreign Ministers in December.”
He emphasized that India’s permanent membership in the UNSC, coupled with its balanced and independent approach to key issues, provides an opportunity to efficiently promote the agendas of crucial international associations. Alipov noted the collaboration within the BRICS format and stressed the importance of preserving unbiased multilateral institutions, genuine democracy in international affairs, and global governance based on the central role of the United Nations and international law.
The Russian envoy highlighted the frequent exchanges between the heads of Security Councils and foreign ministers, reflecting the high relevance of their dialogue in the current geopolitical scenario. He reiterated their like-minded approach in upholding the unbiased character of multilateral institutions.
Alipov mentioned the resumption of the work of the Intergovernmental Commission last year and highlighted the continued strong bilateral relations between Russia and India. He also referred to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Moscow, where discussions covered a wide range of global issues, economic cooperation, military-technical cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Jaishankar and Lavrov discussed the progress in economic cooperation, connectivity efforts, and the potential Free Trade Agreement between India and the Eurasian Economic Union. The EAM announced that New Delhi is looking to expand its investments in oil and gas, and amendments have been signed to advance the Kudankulam nuclear power project. Jaishankar termed Russia as India’s “valued and time-tested” partner, emphasizing the significant relationship between the two nations in various sectors, including trade, investment, and military-technical cooperation.
