External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in a telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Thursday. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller confirmed that the leaders addressed the recent series of attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea carried out by Yemen-backed Houthi groups.
The conversation underscored the shared concerns of the United States and India regarding the reckless Houthi attacks in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These attacks pose a threat to the free flow of commerce, jeopardize the safety of innocent mariners, and violate international law, according to Miller.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maritime cooperation in the region, with Secretary Blinken emphasizing the Red Sea’s significance as a major commercial corridor facilitating international trade. The US Secretary welcomed increased cooperation with India in safeguarding freedom of navigation in the region.
The dialogue extended beyond maritime security, touching upon the Israel-Hamas conflict. The leaders discussed efforts to prevent the conflict’s escalation and enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. Blinken also addressed Russia’s “war of aggression” against Ukraine.
Taking to social media, Minister Jaishankar shared insights from the conversation, highlighting the focus on maritime security challenges in the Red Sea region and expressing appreciation for Blinken’s perspectives on the West Asian situation, including Gaza. The leaders exchanged views on developments related to the Ukraine conflict and expressed anticipation for an extensive cooperation agenda in 2024.
This diplomatic interaction follows Blinken’s recent statement in December, where he emphasized the deepening partnership with India and elevated cooperation through the Quad—an alliance involving Australia, India, Japan, and the US. The US State Secretary noted the strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, citing collaborations with the United Kingdom and Australia on nuclear-powered submarines and the establishment of new strategic partnerships with Vietnam and Indonesia.
As India and the US continue to navigate shared challenges and opportunities, their diplomatic efforts underscore a commitment to addressing global issues and fostering cooperation in the realms of security, trade, and strategic partnerships.
