During discussions at the Munich conference, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, flanked by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, emphasized India’s stance on maintaining its oil trade with Russia despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Jaishankar defended India’s approach of maintaining multiple diplomatic options, asserting that it shouldn’t be criticized but rather admired for its strategic flexibility. He highlighted the complexity of international relations and the necessity for countries to navigate various pressures and interests. Blinken appeared to respond positively to Jaishankar’s remarks, smiling during the exchange.
Jaishankar further clarified that while India values relationships beyond mere transactions, it also recognizes the need to make pragmatic choices based on its unique circumstances and partnerships. He emphasized the importance of having diverse options in international partnerships.
The 60th Munich Security Conference, chaired by German Ambassador to the US Christoph Heusgen, provided a platform for such discussions. Jaishankar used the opportunity to portray India as a country with strong ties to Western nations while also emphasizing its role in groups like BRICS and its contributions to global forums like the G20.
In 2023, Russia supplied over 35% of India’s crude imports, amounting to approximately 1.7 million barrels per day. Despite geopolitical tensions, Russia’s oil exports to India remained significant, reflecting the complexities of global energy markets and diplomatic relations.
