South African President Cyril Ramaphosa Lands in New Delhi for G20 Summit

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in New Delhi to participate in the G20 Summit hosted by India this year, and he received a warm welcome from Union Minister of State for Railways, Coal, and Mines, Raosaheb Patil Danve.

India and South Africa established a strategic partnership in March 1997, marking the beginning of a cooperative relationship that has seen numerous bilateral agreements spanning various domains, including economic and commercial cooperation, defense, culture, health, human settlements, public administration, and science and technology, since diplomatic relations were initiated in 1993.

The Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) by India has been instrumental in fostering collaboration for the development of human resources between the two nations. In 2023, India and South Africa commemorate 25 years of their Strategic Partnership and 30 years since the re-establishment of diplomatic ties.

Recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 15th BRICS Summit held in Johannesburg under South Africa’s Presidency.

Furthermore, the 11th Session of India-South Africa Foreign Office Consultations took place on August 3 in New Delhi, co-chaired by Puneet R. Kundal, JS (East and Southern Africa), Ministry of External Affairs, and Ntombizodwa Msutukazi Lallie, Acting Deputy Director-General Asia and Middle East, Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Republic of South Africa.

During these consultations, both nations expressed satisfaction with their bilateral trade, which reached USD 17 billion in 2021-22, and emphasized the importance of further diversifying their trade.

The upcoming G20 Summit in Delhi, scheduled for the weekend, will witness the participation of more than 30 heads of state, top officials from the European Union, invited guest countries, and 14 leaders of international organizations.

India has been presiding over the G20 since December 2022, organizing about 200 meetings related to G20 across 60 cities throughout the year. This 18th G20 Summit will serve as a culmination of all G20 processes and meetings conducted throughout the year, involving ministers, senior officials, and civil societies.
