Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in New Delhi for G20 Summit

PM Modi expressed understanding and gratitude for Russia's unwavering support for all of India's initiatives during its G20 Presidency.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in New Delhi for G20 Summit

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in India to participate in the G20 Summit scheduled for September 9-10 in New Delhi. Lavrov is attending the summit on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a telephone conversation with President Putin, during which the two leaders discussed the progress of bilateral cooperation and shared their perspectives on regional and global issues of mutual interest. President Putin conveyed his inability to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi and designated Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as Russia’s representative, as per a release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

PM Modi expressed understanding and gratitude for Russia’s unwavering support for all of India’s initiatives during its G20 Presidency. The two leaders reviewed various aspects of their bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on mutual concerns, including the recently concluded BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. They concurred to maintain regular communication.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra emphasized the significance of the G20 Summit, which has brought together 41 delegations, including heads of state/government and international organization leaders, under the personal leadership and direction of PM Modi. This gathering represents a momentous occasion for the Global South, marking the largest-ever participation in India.

India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1 of the preceding year and hosted approximately 200 G20-related meetings in 60 cities across the country throughout the year. The 18th G20 Summit serves as the culmination of all these processes and meetings, involving ministers, senior officials, and civil society members.

One notable achievement of India’s G20 presidency has been the transformation of Digital Payment Infrastructure. G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant highlighted that initially, this concept was relatively unknown, but it has since been extensively advanced. Digital Payment Infrastructure has gained widespread acceptance as a means to promote financial inclusion, fast payments, and future innovation, both within the Finance track and Sherpa track of the G20 initiatives.
