“Shopping narrative in Indian songs fake”: Sona Mohapatra at #WeWomenWant Festival

The iTV Network hosted the first ever We Women Want Festival on March 18. Indian singer, composer and lyricist Sona Mohapatra attended the event. “Swag concept has been reserved for men.
The narrative used in certain songs that the girls only fish for shopping, is not the reality,” Sona said in a chucklesome comment over Indian songs.

She said, “Popular culture affects us insidiously. There is a single narrative that women are only interested in shopping, make-up, and getting dressed. This is not the reality. The reality is that women work harder than men with a 23% wage gap.”

Talking about her experience at engineering college, Mohapatra said, “I used to manage so many things at college, even ride a horse and henceforth had to face demeaning graffiti where I was slutshamed. The college campus has since then changed a lot and girls are now able to wear whatever they want to.”
