TN Forges Ahead on the Path of Progress,” PM Modi Unveils Development Projects Valued at Rs 17,300 Crore in Thoothukudi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated, laid the foundation stone for, and dedicated numerous development projects totaling Rs 17,300 crore in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister emphasized that these projects symbolize the ethos of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’.

“Today, Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu is scripting a new narrative of progress. Several projects are being inaugurated here, each playing a crucial role in shaping the roadmap for a developed India. These endeavors also epitomize the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’,” PM Modi remarked.

As part of efforts to establish a transshipment hub on the east coast, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Outer Harbor Container Terminal at V O Chidambaranar Port. This significant infrastructure initiative aims to capitalize on India’s extensive coastline and strategic geographical position, bolstering the nation’s competitiveness in global trade.

Furthermore, PM Modi inaugurated various projects aimed at transforming the V O Chidambaranar Port into the nation’s first Green Hydrogen Hub Port. These initiatives encompass a desalination plant, hydrogen production, and bunkering facilities, among others.

During the ceremony, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal honored PM Modi with a silver ‘chenkol’. Before the inauguration, PM Modi visited an exhibition showcasing the country’s first Green Hydrogen Hub in Thoothukudi.

As part of today’s proceedings, the Prime Minister also flagged off India’s maiden indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel under the Harit Nauka initiative. Manufactured by Cochin Shipyard, this endeavor represents a pioneering stride towards embracing clean energy solutions and aligning with the nation’s net-zero commitments.

Additionally, PM Modi dedicated tourist amenities in 75 lighthouses across ten States/Union Territories. He also inaugurated rail projects aimed at doubling the Vanchi Maniyachchi – Nagercoil rail line, which includes the Vanchi Maniyachchi – Tirunelveli section and the Melappalayam – Aralvaymoli section. Developed at a cost of approximately Rs 1,477 crore, this doubling project is expected to reduce travel time for trains heading towards Chennai from Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, and Tirunelveli.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister inaugurated four road projects in Tamil Nadu, collectively valued at about Rs 4,586 Crore. These projects, including the four-laning of the Jittandahalli-Dharmapuri section of NH-844, aim to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, stimulate socio-economic growth, and facilitate pilgrimage visits in the region.
