A devastating incident occurred in Ranipool, Gangtok District, yesterday evening as a truck crashed into a Tambola program, resulting in three casualties and leaving around 20 individuals admitted to Manipal Hospital. Gangtok District Magistrate Tushar Nikhare provided details of the incident on Sunday.
According to DM Tushar Nikhare, the Tambola program was underway in Ranipool around 7:30 PM on Saturday when the truck unexpectedly entered the area, leading to the tragic loss of three lives. Around 20 individuals were rushed to Manipal Hospital for treatment, where they are currently under observation.
DM Tushar emphasized that medical attention is being diligently provided to the patients, and efforts are underway to prevent any further casualties. The Sikkim government has announced compensation of 5 lakhs for the families of the deceased. Additionally, the state government will cover all expenses for the patients undergoing treatment at Manipal Hospital, including any required referrals outside the state for critical cases.
Regarding the driver’s potential influence, DM Nikhare refrained from commenting, citing an ongoing investigation. The vehicle involved, initially registered with the Sikkim Milk Union, is no longer affiliated with the union and had been auctioned off previously, according to preliminary reports.
Questions about the timing of the mela were addressed by DM Nikhare, assuring that details are being reviewed by the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP). He expressed confidence that appropriate measures would have been imposed by the police authorities if the event had exceeded the allocated time.
As the investigation unfolds, further details are eagerly awaited to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
