Trichy Farmers Support Punjab Farmers’ March

Trichy Farmers Join ‘Delhi Chalo’ March with Symbolic Protest

Farmers from Trichy, Tamil Nadu, extended their support to the ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement led by Punjab farmers on Tuesday. Expressing solidarity, they staged a unique protest by holding human skeletons and lying on the road. Additionally, some farmers climbed a mobile phone tower in Trichy to demonstrate their backing.

P. Ayyakannu, a prominent farmer leader, asserted, “According to the Constitution, we have the right to move freely within the country for our rights, but the police are obstructing farmers from protesting in Delhi.” He further stated, “If PM Modi contests from any constituency in TN in the coming elections, then farmers will file nomination against him from that constituency.”

Meanwhile, Haryana police detained several protesting farmers as they marched towards Delhi, where they attempted to breach multi-layered barricades using tractors and hand weapons. Concrete slabs, iron nails, barricades, and barbed wires have been erected at various border points, with paramilitary personnel deployed for security.

The farmers have presented 12 demands to the central government, motivating their journey to Delhi. The protest is organized by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, led by farmer union leaders Jagjeet Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher. They assert that the central government promised better crop prices, which led to the cessation of the 2021 protest.
