UN Secretary-General Guterres Lands in India for G20 Summit

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has arrived in New Delhi to participate in the 18th G20 Summit, which will be hosted at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam on September 9-10. His arrival was marked by a warm reception, featuring a lively folk dance performance. The summit will culminate with the adoption of the G20 Leader’s Declaration.

India, as a founding member of the United Nations, has consistently and vigorously supported the principles and objectives of the UN.

The country has played a significant role in advancing the goals outlined in the UN Charter and the development of the organization’s specialized programs and agencies, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

India firmly believes that the United Nations, along with the international norms it has cultivated, remains the most effective framework for addressing the complex global challenges of today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced this perspective during the BRICS Summit in August, emphasizing the imperative need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The joint statement from the BRICS countries echoed this call for UNSC reforms and expressed support for the aspirations of emerging and developing nations such as India, Brazil, and South Africa.

Antonio Guterres also commended India’s role as the host of the G20 Presidency during the ASEAN Summit in Indonesia. He expressed confidence that India would make every effort to bridge the existing geopolitical divides and ensure that the G20 Summit yields substantial results.

“I am confident that India will do everything possible to make sure that the geopolitical divide that exists, is overcome and that the G20 can conclude with possible results…I will be very interested in seeing the emerging economies and developed countries that are gathering in the G20 to be able to come to a united approach, to an increased ambition,” Guterres said.

“Ambition in mitigation to reduce emissions as we are facing a catastrophic climate situation and ambition in justice to provide developing countries with the resources they need for climate action in adaptation and in mitigation,” he added.
