US Flags Irregularities in Pakistan Polls

US Raises Concerns Over Pakistan’s General Elections, Vows Support for Democratic Institutions. The United States has voiced reservations regarding the irregularities observed during Pakistan’s February 8 general elections, reaffirming its commitment to bolstering the country’s democratic institutions and collaborating on countering terrorist threats.

Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu, a key figure in recent diplomatic tensions, is set to testify before a Congressional panel titled ‘Pakistan After the Elections: Examining the Future of Democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan Relationship’. Lu’s testimony will address issues surrounding the election and the future of US-Pakistan relations.

The elections saw controversy following leaked diplomatic communications used by former Prime Minister Imran Khan to allege a US conspiracy against his government in 2022. Khan now faces trial for mishandling confidential documents.

In his written testimony, Lu highlighted concerns regarding restrictions on freedom of expression, violence, and interference in the electoral process. Despite acknowledging positive aspects such as increased female participation and diverse political representation, Lu emphasized the need for thorough investigation into irregularities.

Stressing Pakistan’s importance as a partner, Lu outlined US support for democratic institutions, economic stability, and counterterrorism efforts. He warned against mounting debt challenges and advocated for economic reforms to ensure sustainable growth.

The aftermath of the elections witnessed the formation of a coalition government by parties led by Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N and Bilawal Bhutto’s PPP, prompting allegations of mandate theft from Khan’s PTI.

The US stance underscores the complexities surrounding Pakistan’s electoral landscape and its implications for domestic and international relations.
