WB: Sukanta Majumdar, BJP leader, apprehended during demonstration against TMC figure in Sandeshkhali

West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was detained by West Bengal Police following his participation in a protest demanding the apprehension of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh in the violence-stricken area of Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district.

During his demonstration in Sandeshkhali, the BJP State president, Sukanta Majumdar, was taken into custody by the police. He had obtained permission to visit the troubled region and subsequently staged a protest in front of a police station, urging action against the TMC leader.

Accompanied by a significant number of security personnel, Majumdar had arrived in the violence-affected Sandeshkhali with prior police authorization, engaging in discussions with local women.

Earlier in the day, Majumdar had attempted to visit party members detained in the Basirhaat area but was denied access by the jail administration. Despite this, he expressed determination to meet them, emphasizing the innocence of those detained.

Regarding the situation in Sandeshkhali, Majumdar highlighted the solidarity of the Bharatiya Janta Party with its workers and criticized the absence of action against TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan.

He also questioned the delay in Sheikh Shahjahan’s arrest and advocated for the intervention of the ST Commission due to the substantial impact of the violence on STs in the region.

Prior to this, the West Bengal BJP president had announced a planned 72-hour protest demanding Sheikh Shahjahan’s arrest amidst the ongoing turmoil in the state.

In response to accusations from Mamata Banerjee regarding BJP’s involvement in instigating violence, Majumdar urged her to show sensitivity towards the women in the state and refrain from such allegations.

It’s noteworthy that the Supreme Court intervened on Monday by halting the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee proceedings against senior officials of West Bengal concerning the Sandeshkhali protest, initiated following a complaint filed by BJP Member of Parliament Sukanta Majumdar.

The Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal has been gripped by unrest for over a week, with female protestors seeking justice against alleged atrocities committed by TMC leader Sheikh Shajahan and his associates.
