Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during an address to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) members in Islamabad on Wednesday, emphasized the need for self-reflection as he discussed Pakistan’s economic challenges and the country’s development trajectory.
Acknowledging the achievements of neighboring countries, Sharif remarked, “Our neighbors have reached the moon, but we haven’t even risen from the ground so far. It can’t keep going on like this.” He pointed out that Pakistan is responsible for its own economic struggles, stating, “We have been responsible for our own downfall; otherwise, this nation would have reached a different place.”
Addressing the economic situation, Sharif recalled his government’s accomplishments in 2013, citing the resolution of severe electricity load shedding, the eradication of terrorism across the country, restoration of peace in Karachi, infrastructure development including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and the initiation of a new era of prosperity.
Despite being ousted from power three times (in 1993, 1999, and 2017), Sharif took responsibility for the present crises in Pakistan, stating, “We shot ourselves in our foot.” He highlighted the contrast in inflation, pointing out that during his government in 2014, a roti was available for PKR 2, whereas it has now surged to PKR 30.
Commenting on legal challenges, Sharif claimed that ‘fake cases’ were registered against him, his daughter Maryam, and other PML-N leaders. He highlighted that the Islamabad High Court overturned convictions in two cases after only three hearings.
Advocating for women’s development, Sharif stressed the importance of gender equality in national progress. He urged Pakistan to prioritize women’s participation in development, stating, “Every nation that has developed has prioritized women in development.”
In a recent call for accountability, Sharif reiterated his stance during a PML-N parliamentary board meeting in Lahore, emphasizing that he has no interest in seeking revenge but insisted on holding those responsible for his ouster in 2017 accountable. “I have no right to pardon those who are the enemy of the people,” he declared, calling for the conspirators’ names to be brought forward.
