Wife Commits Suicide After Husband Loss ₹1 Cr In IPL Betting

Tragedy struck in Chitradurga, Karnataka, as Ranjitha, a 24-year-old wife, was found hanging in her home , amid financial turmoil attributed to her husband’s involvement in online cricket betting.

According to family sources, Darshan, an engineer, had accrued a debt of over ₹1 crore due to his penchant for betting on cricket matches, particularly Indian Premier League (IPL) games, since 2021. The relentless harassment by creditors, following Darshan’s mounting debts, allegedly led Ranjitha to take her own life.

Darshan, employed as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga, found himself entangled in the world of IPL betting, which significantly impacted the couple’s financial stability. Reports indicate that Darshan had borrowed over ₹1.5 crore to sustain his betting activities, resulting in substantial losses. Despite repaying a portion of the borrowed amount, Darshan still had an outstanding loan of ₹84 lakh.

Ranjitha’s father, Venkatesh, revealed that his daughter became aware of Darshan’s involvement in betting in 2021, leading to considerable distress. In his complaint, Venkatesh blamed the incessant harassment by moneylenders for his daughter’s tragic decision. He also implicated 13 individuals who had allegedly lent money to Darshan, coercing him into betting with promises of quick wealth.

The discovery of a suicide note further elucidated the anguish faced by the couple due to financial pressures. Darshan and Ranjitha leave behind a two-year-old son, adding to the devastation of their untimely loss.

In response to the incident, legal action has been initiated against the 13 suspects for abetment to suicide. Three individuals have been arrested thus far, while the remaining suspects are still evading authorities. The case underscores the perils associated with online betting and the dire consequences it can inflict on individuals and their families.
