WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism on Monday as global trade leaders convened in Abu Dhabi for a four-day meeting. She emphasized the importance of demonstrating the WTO’s ability to deliver tangible benefits for people through trade.

Addressing the 13th Ministerial Conference, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the need for collective effort and political will among member countries. She acknowledged challenges but noted a more constructive atmosphere compared to previous conferences.

Reflecting on the achievements of the 12th Ministerial Conference in Geneva, Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the historic agreements on fisheries subsidies and COVID-19 vaccine patents. She stressed the importance of reaffirming the WTO’s role in global trade and delivering tangible benefits to people.

As the first woman and African to serve as WTO Director-General, Okonjo-Iweala’s term underscores a pivotal moment for the organization. Welcoming Timor-Leste and Comoros as new members, she praised their dedication to joining the WTO family.

The ongoing conference seeks to build on past successes and demonstrate the WTO’s continued relevance in addressing global trade challenges. Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership aims to ensure that the WTO delivers meaningful benefits to people worldwide through trade.
