Barack Obama has shared his thoughts on the 2024 presidential election results following Kamala Harris’s concession speech. In a joint statement with Michelle Obama, the former president congratulated Donald Trump on his victory, though he acknowledged it was “not the outcome we hoped for.”
The Obamas were active supporters of Harris’s campaign, making appearances in the final weeks before Election Day. Despite their support, Harris ultimately fell short in the election.
In his official statement, Obama said, “As I said on the campaign trail, America has been through a lot over the last few years — from a historic pandemic and price hikes resulting from the pandemic, to rapid change and the feeling a lot of folks have that, no matter how hard they work, treading water is the best they can do,”
Obama added. “Those conditions have created headwinds for democratic incumbents around the world, and last night showed that America is not immune.
He also said, “The good news is that these problems are solvable — but only if we listen to each other, and only if we abide by the core constitutional principles and democratic norms that made this country great.”
In their statement, released shortly after Harris’s remarks at Howard University, Barack and Michelle Obama highlighted that America’s diverse electorate naturally responds to the country’s conditions, leading to Republican victories across various races. The Obamas emphasized the need for Americans to approach differences with “good faith and grace.”
Harris, visibly emotional, told supporters to remain hopeful despite the results, acknowledging, “This is not what we wanted.” She promised to assist in a peaceful transition of power, noting that she had already spoken with Trump, which received mixed reactions from her audience.
