Chinese President Xi Jinping called Donald Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his U.S. presidential election victory, according to CNN, citing unnamed sources. The call from Xi came after Trump secured a decisive win, which was closely followed by observers in China.
Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry publicly congratulated Trump in a statement on its website, noting that it respects the “choice of the American people.” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated China’s consistent stance toward U.S. relations, emphasizing “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.” When asked about Trump’s return to the White House, Mao expressed confidence in maintaining stable China-U.S. relations.
Chinese social media also reacted to Trump’s win, with several discussions trending on the popular platform Weibo, highlighting the significance of the U.S. election results in China.
China’s Foreign Ministry indicated it would handle any additional matters following the official U.S. election announcement, leaving the door open for further formal diplomatic gestures.
