During a campaign event in Detroit, Michigan, Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee Kamala Harris’ running mate and Minnesota governor, made headlines by referring to Tesla CEO Elon Musk as a “gay guy.” While discussing the influence of billionaires, Walz remarked, “If you’re a billionaire—Elon Musk, for example say—that guy, that gay guy [chuckles]…Michigan knows that word. Look, that dude got a tax cut…”
His comments were met with both laughter and criticism, stirring up a social media frenzy.
Elon Musk wasted no time in responding to Walz’s comment. He took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to say, “I have no problem being called gay tbh,” which seemed to downplay any potential offense. His lighthearted reply has drawn attention, as many on social media echoed his sentiment while also discussing the implications of Walz’s remarks.

Reactions on social media were diverse, with some users finding humor in Walz’s words. One user tweeted, “Tim Walz calling Elon Musk gay is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Like Tim isn’t wearing his wife’s heels and dresses while she pegs him. Sir, the call is coming from inside the house with those Jazz hands.” However, not everyone was amused; others criticized the comment, asserting that it was disrespectful to Musk. One user expressed, “This is beyond pathetic. Elon Musk is a national asset and deserves respect, regardless of the party or candidate he supports. Shame on the Democrats.”
Another Twitter user questioned the logic behind Walz’s description, saying, “He’s calling Elon Musk gay yet he has 11 children that are biologically his and he supports everyone. I wonder if he’s calling him gay for being happy?”
As the backlash continued, the Harris-Walz campaign had yet to issue a statement addressing Walz’s remark. Meanwhile, Musk remains in the news for other reasons, as he continues to offer cash prizes to registered voters through his political group, America PAC. He has been providing incentives to those in swing states who sign a petition, although this practice has raised concerns about potential violations of electoral law, a claim Musk has denied.
Musk has announced plans to award a staggering $1 million each day to residents in battleground states, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, and North Carolina, until November 5. This initiative adds another layer of controversy surrounding the billionaire, who continues to be a polarizing figure in American politics.
