The 2024 U.S. presidential elections have concluded with an unexpected but decisive victory for former President Donald Trump, signaling a stunning political comeback. Despite facing multiple legal battles and intense opposition.
His campaign’s last-minute push and strategic messaging resonated deeply with key voter groups, including the influential Hindu-American community and disaffected voters across the nation. As Trump prepares for a second term, political analysts and foreign affairs experts are already reflecting on what his presidency will mean for both the U.S. and the world.
On his social media handle, while congratulating Trump on his victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Heartiest congratulations, my friend on your historic election victory. As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity.”
U.S. industrialist and founder of the Republican Hindu Coalition, Shalabh Shalli Kumar, celebrated Trump’s victory, emphasizing the significant margin by which he won: “…Our party is most elated about the fact that the victory was not just a thousand votes. The victory was hundreds of thousands of votes in every place. So it is a great victory.”
Kumar credited the late-stage campaign efforts for their pivotal role in shifting Hindu-American votes, particularly in key swing states. “Our goal was to at least switch over 200,000 Hindu votes from Kamala to Trump in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and that’s what happened,” Kumar said.
He also highlighted the effectiveness of a well-timed Diwali tweet from Trump, which catalyzed a five-day campaign targeting Hindu voters. “There was no campaign from the Republican side for Hindu Americans, but the tweet on Diwali changed everything,” Kumar explained. Through strategic ads and messaging, they sought to inform the community about Vice President Kamala Harris’s stance on issues important to Hindus and the broader Indian diaspora, notably questioning her true ties to Hinduism and revealing her left-wing political background. “Just because her name is Kamala doesn’t mean that she’s friendly towards Hindus,” he added, underscoring concerns about her ideological leanings.
Foreign affairs expert Sushant Sareen offered his analysis on the broader implications of Trump’s victory, noting that Kamala Harris’s presidential ambitions now appear increasingly distant. “…The path for Kamala Harris’ presidency is becoming increasingly narrow & it’s almost getting blocked. It looks like Donald Trump will become President for the second time,” Sareen remarked, pointing to the resilience Trump displayed amid legal and political challenges.
Despite the intense opposition, the conviction cases, and media scrutiny, Trump’s message resonated with voters across the country. Sareen added, “The issues which he raised seemed to have worked with the people…I think it is becoming quite clear that he is going to be the 47th President of the United States.”
On the global front, former Deputy NSA and Ambassador Pankaj Saran highlighted the potential for a strengthened India-U.S. relationship under Trump’s second term. Saran pointed to the strong personal ties between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that Modi’s recent tweet of support signaled confidence in Trump’s return. “The personal relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Modi is there, is visible,” Saran said.
From a strategic standpoint, Saran emphasized the positive outlook for India-U.S. relations in the Trump administration. “I think from a political and a strategic perspective, I think we are in for a much better period compared to the Biden period of the relationship,” Saran commented, suggesting that Trump’s approach to India would likely build on the strong foundations of his first term.
While there will undoubtedly be challenges, Saran believes the U.S.-India partnership is poised for greater advancements under Trump. “Yes, there will be some areas of problem which we can discuss. But broadly speaking, I think the India-U.S. relationship is poised for even greater advancement with the Trump administration,” he concluded.
As President Trump embarks on his second term, the political landscape in the U.S. will undergo significant changes. With strong support from key demographics like the Hindu-American community and a clear victory in battleground states, Trump’s re-election signals a deep political divide in the country. Internationally, his policies are expected to reshape U.S. foreign relations, particularly in areas like the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Middle East tensions, and China.
