U.S. ELECTION NEWS

US Election: Tornadoes, Thunderstorms Loom As U.S. Heads To Polls

As millions head to the polls on Election Day 2024, weather across the United States could create significant disruptions. From severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in parts of the central U.S. to snow showers in the Northwest, the weather could complicate the voting process for many.

Strong Cold Front, Thunderstorms, and Tornado Risk

A powerful cold front is moving through the country’s midsection, bringing thunderstorms and gusty winds to key battleground states. Michigan and Wisconsin will be especially affected, with heavy rain expected to impact voters throughout the day.

“There’s a threat of lightning and heavy downpours from Louisiana and Arkansas through the middle Mississippi River Valley and Lower Ohio Valley,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Pydynowski. The severe weather could create hazards for those waiting outdoors to cast their votes.

Additionally, areas in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas could experience tornadoes early on Tuesday, further complicating the Election Day experience for voters in these states.

Warmth and Snow: A Tale of Two Extremes

While severe weather impacts the central U.S., other parts of the country are facing opposite extremes. The Deep South and Ohio Valley will experience unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs in the 70s and 80s, while the Northwest braces for snow and blizzard conditions.

AccuWeather forecasts indicate that snow and cold will affect parts of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana, potentially leading to difficult travel conditions and disruptions in voting.

Heavy Rain, Flooding Expected in Some Regions

Many areas, especially in the Plains and Midwest, will receive heavy rain, potentially causing flooding. Southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, and central Oklahoma are expected to see 8 to 12 inches of rain, according to AccuWeather. As a result, localized flooding could cause delays at polling stations and on the roads.

“The rain will bring much-needed moisture to the Plains, but it could also create dangerous driving conditions, particularly in areas with poor drainage,” Pydynowski warned.

Drier Conditions for Some Regions, Fire Threat in California

The Northeast, Southwest, and mid-Atlantic regions are expected to remain dry, allowing voters to go to the polls without worrying about weather delays. However, California faces critical fire weather conditions due to gusty winds and dry conditions, creating challenges for both voters and emergency responders in the state.

Forecasts for Key Battleground States

  • Arizona: Mild temperatures in the 60s to 70s with dry weather before a cold front moves in Wednesday.
  • Georgia: Warm temperatures between 75–80°F, with rain possible in southwestern parts later in the day.
  • Michigan: A rainy Election Day across the state, with highs in the upper 70s in Detroit.
  • Nevada: Calm weather expected, with temperatures in the 60s, and Las Vegas reaching around 70°F.
  • Wisconsin: Chilly, rainy conditions, especially in southern areas, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s.
