The 2024 US presidential election will take place on November 5, with results expected to be released on November 6. With Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in a tightly contested race, delays in declaring the final results are anticipated, according to analysts and pre-election surveys.

Polling Day and Voting Hours

Voting for the US presidential election will officially take place on Tuesday, November 5. Polling hours will vary by state, but generally, polls will be open from 6 am to 8 pm local time. In Indian Standard Time (IST), this means polling will run from 4:30 pm on November 5 to 6 am on November 6.

In key battleground states—Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin—the voting will typically close between 7 pm and 11 pm EST. The ballots will be counted soon after the polls close, although results may take longer in states where voting continues past the Eastern time zone.

Exit Polls and Ballot Counting

Exit polls are expected to be released starting at 5 pm EST on November 5, or around 2:30 am IST on November 6. As soon as polling concludes, the ballots will begin to be counted. While results will start coming in from the Eastern states shortly after polling ends, results from the Western states may be delayed as voting continues there.

In swing states, the official counting of ballots will begin around 7 pm EST on November 5, or 5:30 am IST on November 6, and results should follow soon after.
