Multiple people were shot along Interstate 75 in a rural area south of Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday, according to local authorities. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooting in a social media post, describing it as an “active shooter situation” with “numerous persons” injured near the highway.
The incident prompted the immediate closure of a section of I-75, approximately 9 miles north of London, Kentucky, as law enforcement and emergency services rushed to the scene. The area was quickly flooded with a heavy police and fire presence, working urgently to secure the situation and assist the victims.

Heavy Emergency Response at the Scene
The Mount Vernon Fire Department released a statement emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the coordinated efforts underway by emergency personnel. “A heavy presence of police and fire personnel” is on-site, the statement read, adding that they are “working diligently to address the situation.” Motorists were advised to steer clear of the affected routes, specifically avoiding both I-75 and US 25.
Governor Beshear Monitoring the Situation
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear responded to the unfolding crisis, providing assurances that the state’s agencies were actively involved. In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Beshear said, “I am receiving initial reports from the Kentucky State Police and our Office of Homeland Security — together we are actively monitoring the situation and offering support in any way possible.” He urged the public, “Please pray for everyone involved.”
While details remain scarce, Governor Beshear promised updates would be shared as soon as more information becomes available. “We will provide more details once they are available,” he added.
Interstate Closure and Travel Disruptions
The closure of I-75 caused significant disruptions, with traffic being redirected away from the area as authorities worked to secure the scene. Emergency responders, including local police, fire crews, and state officials, maintained a strong presence, focusing on public safety and coordinating with various agencies to manage the unfolding emergency.
Travelers on both I-75 and nearby US 25 were advised to avoid the area as law enforcement continued to respond to the active shooter situation. Authorities have not yet provided information on the suspect or suspects involved, the number of victims, or the nature of the injuries sustained.
