After McCarthy’s Removal, Trump Offers to Temporarily Assume Senate Speaker Role ‘If Needed

After Kevin McCarthy’s removal, former President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to temporarily serve as the Speaker of the House of Representatives to help unify the Republican Party until a long-term candidate is chosen. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Trump stated that he has been approached by lawmakers due to his extensive congressional friendships and, though not his preference, he is open to taking on the role temporarily to assist the party.

He clarified, “They have asked me if I would take it for a short period of time for the party until they come to a conclusion. I’m not doing it because I want to, but I will do it if necessary should they not be able to make their decision.”

Following the historic vote that removed Speaker Kevin McCarthy from office, he was replaced by McHenry. McCarthy’s tenure, which began on January 7, 2023, lasted for just 269 days, making it the second shortest in U.S. history. The removal came after McCarthy’s controversial move to prevent a government shutdown, which drew the ire of hardline Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Candidates like House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan of Ohio have declared their intentions to run for Speaker following McCarthy’s removal.

In case the Republican Party struggles to reach a consensus, Trump has indicated his willingness to step in as Speaker for a brief period, whether it be for 30, 60, or 90 days. Republican Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina will temporarily assume leadership of the House of Representatives following the vacancy in the Speaker’s position earlier this week.
