The United States has dismissed as “laughable” and “false” the claim that it played a role in the ousting of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 after facing widespread protests against her government, particularly concerning a controversial job quota system. Following her departure, an interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, took over in the country.
Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokesperson for the US State Department, responded on Tuesday to Hasina’s accusation that the United States orchestrated the mass protests that led to her resignation after weeks of unrest. “That’s laughable. Any suggestion that the United States was involved in Sheikh Hasina’s resignation is absolutely false,” Patel stated.
He also highlighted the spread of disinformation in recent weeks and emphasized the US commitment to maintaining information integrity, particularly with its partners in South Asia. The United States reiterated on Monday that it will continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh, with President Joe Biden remaining steadfast in addressing human rights issues.
